This work was made to reflect our society's seemingly indifference to air pollution. I was/am concerned about air quality in my home town of Bath. At times I found it almost impossible to breathe when walking through the city, especially during the rush hours. I worried for my own health, but even more about the effect of such high levels of toxins on the developing lungs of small children walking to and from school at these times.
With this in mind, I strived to give my work a voice. For this piece I have used a red earthenware crank that I have coiled and then pummelled into a mould. The marks left by the pummelling and particles of the constituent materials– sand and grog – visible in the surface, suggest the pollutant particles in the air we breathe put there by human hands.
